Zurich tops many travelers’ lists when visiting Switzerland. As the country’s financial hub and its largest city, Zurich boasts stunning views of Lake Zurich and the Limmat River, offering a wealth of activities to fill your itinerary. With three days in this vibrant city, you’ll have ample time to explore its highlights. This guide will help you plan an unforgettable three-day trip in Zurich, covering must-see attractions, dining options, and essential tips for getting around.

How To Spend 3 Days in Zurich

Welcome to your first day in Zurich! You’ll kick off your adventure by exploring the charming Old Town before heading to the trendiest area of the city, Zurich West. This unique district beautifully blends historic and modern elements, showcasing the best of both worlds. A guided walking tour is highly recommended for your exploration; it’s a fantastic way to familiarize yourself with the city's top landmarks while planning the rest of your stay.

Zurich Itinerary Day 1

On Day 1 of this itinerary, immerse yourself in a walking tour that covers both the Old Town and Zurich West. If you're staying in Old Town, you'll find that all major attractions are within walking distance, followed by a brief 10-minute public transit ride to reach Zurich West.

Note: The best way to navigate Zurich is with a Zurich Card. This card allows unlimited travel on buses, trains, cable cars, trams, short boat trips, and even a cruise on the Limmat River.

1. Rechberg Gardens

Nestled next to Hotel Florhof, Rechberg Gardens is one of Zurich's most picturesque spots. Situated directly behind the historic Rechberg Mansion, which dates back to 1759 and was renovated in 2014, these gardens are a cultural gem open to the public. The Baroque-style gardens offer a peaceful retreat and serve as a delightful way to begin your day in Zurich.

2. University of Zurich View

As you continue your morning stroll, head towards one of Zurich's best viewpoints at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) within the University of Zurich. Here, you can enjoy panoramic vistas of the Old Town, Limmat River, and the city's iconic church steeples. For an easy ascent to the panorama terrace, consider taking the Polybahn funicular—an iconic transportation method in Zurich included with the Zurich Card. This historic funicular has been operating since 1889 but offers a lovely walk up as well.

3. Get Lost in the Alleyways of Altstadt

After soaking in views from the university, enjoy a leisurely downhill stroll through Altstadt (Old Town). Part of Zurich's charm lies in exploring its boutiques, discovering hidden fountains, and finding cozy coffee shops perfect for people-watching on sunny patios. While wandering through Old Town, don’t miss Café Voltaire—the birthplace of Dadaism—or visit Belleview Apotheke which dates back to 1887. You can also relax with an Aperol Spritz at an outdoor café along Niederdorfstrasse's pedestrian-only street.

4. Grossmünster

Before leaving the west bank of the Limmat River, be sure to visit Grossmünster (Great Minster), arguably Zurich’s most iconic structure. Legend has it that Charlemagne built this church over the graves of two local patrons after discovering them here. Inside, you’ll find a large sculpture of Charlemagne himself in the crypt below ground level. Grossmünster holds significant historical importance as it was pivotal to Switzerland's Reformation movement. Climbing up its tower will reward you with breathtaking views; entry costs 5 CHF for access to all 187 steps leading up.

5. Cross the Münsterbrücke

A visit to Zurich wouldn't be complete without crossing Münsterbrücke footbridge, which connects Grossmünster across the Limmat River to Fraumünster Cathedral. Be sure to pause and admire stunning views along your journey as you take in sights such as Rathaus (Zurich’s Old Town Hall). The scenic beauty surrounding this bridge truly encapsulates what makes Zurich so special.

Fraumünster Church

Fraumünster Church, or the Church of Our Lady, is a historical gem in Zurich that dates back to 835. It is renowned for its stunning stained glass windows designed by Marc Chagall. There is an entrance fee of CHF 5 to explore this beautiful church.

Spend the Afternoon in Zurich West

After taking in the sights of the old town, it's time to discover Zurich's trendiest neighborhood: Zurich West. This vibrant area is perfect for an afternoon and evening filled with local culture and experiences. Hop on the streetcar and immerse yourself in all that Zurich West has to offer.

Frau Gerolds Garten (Mrs. Gerold’s Garden) for Lunch

Enjoy a late lunch at Frau Gerolds Garten, an inviting outdoor space featuring eateries and bars nestled within a community garden. Its funky atmosphere sets the stage for your afternoon adventure in Zurich West.

Freitag Tower

A highlight of Zurich West is the iconic Freitag Tower. Known for stylish bags crafted from recycled truck tarps and airbags, Freitag's flagship store is housed within this remarkable structure made from 19 stacked shipping containers reaching 26 meters (85 feet) high.

Urban Surf

Adjacent to Freitag Tower lies Urban Surf, an extraordinary destination that will make you feel like you're on a Caribbean beach. With beach umbrellas lining a deck around a giant wave pool, you can catch some waves or simply unwind with a cocktail under the sun.

Go Art Hunting

Once you've soaked up some sun, venture out to discover unique art scattered throughout Zurich West. From impressive towers at Escher-Wyss-Platz to artistic displays at Maag Hall—currently showcasing LEONARDO DA VINCI – UOMO UNIVERSALE—and exhibits at Puls 5, there's plenty to explore.

Shop along the Zurich Im Viadukt

Next, head over to Zurich Im Viadukt, a distinctive shopping destination spanning 550 yards along an old railway viaduct. Here you'll find boutique shops and restaurants nestled within its 36 arches. Don’t forget to stroll along the top of the viaduct for breathtaking views of Josefwiese park and beyond!

Cocktail at Clouds Prime Tower

If you’re looking to unwind after a busy day, head to Clouds located in the Prime Tower, the tallest tower in Zurich. Perched on the 35th floor, Clouds serves as the highest bar in the city and offers stunning views of Zurich’s skyline. If you're feeling indulgent, you can also enjoy dinner here.

After a full day of exploration, hop on the tram with your Zurich Card and return to your hotel—there’s still plenty more to discover on your Zurich itinerary.

Nightlife in Zurich

As night falls, Zurich transforms into a vibrant hub for nightlife enthusiasts. The Kreis 5 district is particularly lively, boasting an array of bars, clubs, and lounges. Here you can dance at the iconic Kaufleuten club or sip cocktails at the trendy Bar 8001. For a more laid-back vibe, consider visiting Café des Amis.

Music lovers should not miss Moods Club, which features an exciting lineup of performances ranging from jazz and blues to rock and pop. If theater captivates you, check out what's playing at Theater am Neumarkt for an entertaining evening filled with plays and musicals.

Attend an Event or Concert

Zurich’s calendar is packed with events throughout the year catering to various interests—whether it be film, music, or culinary delights. One highlight is the Zurich Film Festival which draws cinema enthusiasts from around the globe with its impressive lineup of screenings and events.

For those who enjoy live music, don’t miss the Zurich Jazz Festival. If food is your passion, indulge in delicious offerings at the Street Food Festival featuring cuisines from around the world. Summer brings even more excitement with events like Zürich Openair Festival that combines live music with food and drinks outdoors; while winter enchants visitors with festive Christmas markets showcasing traditional treats and unique gifts.

Zurich Itinerary Day 2

Spend the Morning of Day 2 on Water and Lake Zurich

Day two promises picturesque views as you explore both waterfronts of Zurich while indulging in some exquisite Swiss chocolate—don’t forget to visit the Lindt Factory for a delightful tour and tasting experience!

Sunrise at Lindenhof

'Start your day early by heading up to Lindenhof for breathtaking sunrise views. Once a Roman castle site, this charming park sits atop a hill offering panoramic vistas over Limmat River along with sights of Old Town and Grossmünster cathedral. Sunrise here provides a serene atmosphere where you can appreciate nature before crowds arrive.'

St. Peter’s Church

Next up is a leisurely stroll along Limmat River towards St. Peter’s Church which houses Europe’s largest church clock. Dating back to the 9th century, this historic structure holds significant value as Zurich's oldest church; entry is free if you'd like to explore inside.

Breakfast at Cafe Milchbar am Paradeplatz

Start your day early by enjoying breakfast at Cafe Milchbar located at Paradeplatz. This serene courtyard is the perfect spot to indulge in a cappuccino and a pastry, setting the tone for an exciting day ahead as you prepare to explore the wonders beyond Zurich's Old Town. Your first destination? The stunning Lake Zurich.

Bürkliplatz Pier

Bürkliplatz Pier serves as a vibrant square on Lake Zurich, where you can catch a boat for a scenic tour around the lake. Enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains and the picturesque shores of Lake Zurich. The pier also hosts a vegetable market twice weekly and a bustling farmer’s market on Sundays, making it a lively gathering spot. A delightful walking path meanders through this area, leading to attractions like Arboretum Park and various swimming platforms along the lake. Today, however, use your Zurich Card to hop on the ferry bound for Wollishofen.

Boat to Wollishofen

Wollishofen is an artist community that has transformed from its industrial roots into a vibrant hub filled with creativity. Notably, when large developers invest in properties in Zurich, they must allocate a portion of their investment towards supporting the local art community. Wollishofen hosts numerous festivals and events throughout the year and offers plenty of dining options.

Cassiopeia Boardwalk

As you stroll along Lake Zurich from Wollishofen, don’t miss out on the beautiful Cassiopeia Boardwalk. An interesting aspect of this area is that waterfront properties are no longer available for sale; instead, the city ensures public access to these stunning natural spaces. For properties owned prior to this regulation, boardwalks have been constructed along the lakefront, allowing visitors to enjoy unhindered walks along Lake Zurich.

Lunch at Mönchhof am See on Lake Zurich

With your morning adventures wrapping up, it’s time for lunch! There are many delightful eateries along Lake Zurich; one favorite is Mönchhof am See. Nestled by the water with views overlooking an historic harbor, this beer garden is ideal for savoring fresh salads paired with delectable truffle fries while taking in sweeping vistas of the Swiss Alps in the background. Just be sure not to fill up too much—you have another delicious stop ahead!

Lindt Home of Chocolate

After lunch, either take a bus or stroll off those calories as you head towards Lindt Home of Chocolate—a must-visit attraction on any itinerary in Zurich! Chocolate lovers will revel in this interactive multimedia experience housed within a state-of-the-art facility featuring a chocolate testing plant where chocolatiers innovate new recipes and techniques right before your eyes.

Bahnhofstrasse

After visiting the chocolate museum, head back to downtown Zurich to explore Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s most luxurious shopping streets. This iconic boulevard runs from Lake Zurich to Hauptbahnhof station. Use your Zurich card to hop on a tram back downtown and begin your window shopping along this pedestrian-friendly street. While streetcars and traffic bustle around, the wide sidewalks allow you to leisurely browse high-end stores like Gucci, Rolex, Chanel, and Burberry. Once you've enjoyed the sights of this lavish shopping avenue, it's time for dinner.

Niederdorfstrasse

Continue your journey towards Paradeplatz in search of a delightful meal. We opted for an outdoor table at Restaurant Zeughauskeller, a historic establishment dating back to 1487. Its popularity is well-earned thanks to excellent service and authentic Swiss cuisine – making it the perfect spot for dining in Zurich.

Head to Quaibrücke for Sunset

Depending on the season, you may find yourself dining before sunset. In summer when sunsets are later, it's wise to eat early as many restaurants close their kitchens soon after dinner hours. After your meal, make your way to Quaibrücke—the bridge connecting Zurich Old Town with Lake Zurich. This is a prime location for capturing stunning photos of the Limmat River and Zurich's four prominent churches. As sunset approaches, cross the street for breathtaking views of The Alps illuminated over Lake Zurich.

After a fulfilling day exploring Zürich since sunrise, it’s best to call it an early night. If you're looking for a nightcap before bed, consider stopping by Jules Verne Panoramabar for its incredible views or Old Crow for expertly crafted cocktails; Café Odeon offers champagne if you want something classic—it was the first place ever served champagne by the glass!

Zurich Day 3

On your final day in Zurich, embrace the great outdoors as locals do—by heading toward the lakefront. Take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront towards Arboretum where sunbathers relax by the water’s edge. Continue on until you reach Badi Enge; here awaits our favorite outdoor activity in Zurich!

SUP on Lake Zurich

Badi Enge is a public swimming area on Lake Zurich that features sun decks, swimming lanes, a restaurant, and even a sauna—all with stunning views of both Lake Zurich and The Alps! To fully immerse yourself in this beautiful setting, rent a paddleboard and navigate along the waterfront through the marina into Schanzengraben Canal—a picturesque experience not to be missed!

Relax at Seebad Enge

Once you’ve wrapped up paddleboarding adventures, enjoy some downtime by taking a swim or lounging on swimming platforms at Seebad Enge. You can also grab lunch here or refill your water bottle before continuing on with your day.

Lunch at Swiss Chuchi

While Seebad Enge is a lovely lunch spot, we highly recommend heading back to the Old Town for an authentic Swiss Fondue experience at Swiss Chuchi. No visit to Switzerland is complete without indulging in this classic dish. Nestled in the heart of the Old Town, Swiss Chuchi offers not just great food but also easy access to your next adventure.

Go up to Uetliberg

After lunch, hop on the tram and catch the train to Uetliberg. The journey from the Old Town takes about an hour via public transport, making it a perfect afternoon excursion. Standing at 869 meters (2850 feet) above Zurich, Uetliberg rewards visitors with breathtaking views. The train takes you nearly to the summit, after which it's just a 10 to 15-minute walk to reach an incredible lookout point.

There is a tower that you can climb for 2 CHF and it is definitely worth it. We were initially hesitant about including this in our itinerary, but I'm so glad we did! The panoramic views of the city, lake, mountains, and rolling hills of Limmat Valley are stunning. If time permits, consider embarking on a two-hour hike that leads down from Felsenegg via cable car.

Sunset Over Lake Zurich

On your final evening in Zurich, grab a beer and head down to Lake Zurich for a spectacular sunset view at Sechseläutenplatz. This lively public park along the lakeshore is popular among locals in the evenings and provides beautiful vistas of both nature and architecture. Located right across from the magnificent Zurich Opera House, Sechseläutenplatz spans 16,000 square meters—making it one of Switzerland's largest squares.

Dinner at Biergarten Bauschänzli

As night falls, cross over to the West Bank of the Limmat River for a quintessential beer garden experience at Bauschänzli. Set beneath vast chestnut trees, this venue is ideal for enjoying a refreshing beer in both sunlit afternoons and cozy evenings. For your last night in Zurich, savor local brews while soaking up the traditional atmosphere.
