Get Ready for Yacht Adventures: Discover the Best of Sailing in Croatia

This was our second Yacht Getaways vacation, and it was just as memorable as the first. Last summer, we indulged in a luxurious cruise through the Ionian Islands of Greece, and when we discovered that Yacht Getaways offered another route through Croatia, we couldn’t resist! We’re excited to share our experience from seven days aboard the Dubrovnik Explorer as we sailed along the stunning Dalmatian coast, exploring some of Croatia’s most beautiful cities.

About Yacht Getaways

Yacht Getaways offers a unique cruising experience that is both luxurious and accessible. Before embarking on our journey last year, I assumed that sailing the Mediterranean Sea was reserved for the wealthy elite. However, with cruises starting at €1200, couples like us can enjoy the luxury of exploring crystal-clear waters on a private catamaran.

Together with four other couples, we boarded our catamaran and were warmly welcomed by our Skipper Levi and Host Lauren, who attended to all our needs. Our itinerary included exciting activities such as swimming at the Elaphiti Islands, e-biking through Mljet National Park, and discovering the historic towns of Korcula, Hvar, and Stari Grad. Each day was filled with adventure and relaxation—starting with Lauren preparing hearty breakfasts and delicious lunches as we sailed from one island to another. Here’s what you can expect from a week-long voyage from Dubrovnik to Split.

Day 1: Departure from Dubrovnik – Setting Sail in Style

Our adventure commenced in the breathtaking city of Dubrovnik. We arrived a couple of days early to explore this remarkable place known for its role as Kings Landing in Game of Thrones. Staying at the Dubrovnik Palace Hotel allowed us respite from the crowds while offering convenient access to Old Town via a free shuttle service. After soaking in all that Old Town had to offer, we took an Uber to the Marina where we boarded our private catamaran.

This cruise is far from your typical crowded Mediterranean experience—Yacht Getaways provides an intimate atmosphere with only a small group onboard. Fortunately for us, we shared this journey with an incredible group of people hailing from New Zealand, the United States, Australia, the UK—and even Canada! It truly was a multicultural experience.

Sailing away from Dubrovnik at 4 PM sharp was exhilarating; we reveled in sapphire waters and stunning vistas. Once anchored, we plunged into the warm waters of the Elaphiti Islands while Lauren prepared our welcome dinner aboard. This was just a glimpse into what lay ahead: pristine waters, secluded coves, and ample opportunities for relaxation. As night fell, we enjoyed our first dinner together while watching the sun set over the Adriatic Sea.

Mljet National Park

Imagine waking up to the soothing sound of waves while anchored near the pristine Elaphiti Islands, known for their lush greenery and secluded beaches. Each morning began with a fresh pot of coffee accompanied by an assortment of fruits, pastries, yogurt, and granola. It was the perfect invitation for a refreshing swim or snorkel to kick off the day. As we floated in the calm waters, breakfast was being prepared.

The beauty of sailing is all about flexibility—there's no rush. Some guests eagerly jumped into the water while others savored their coffee on deck under the sun before setting sail to our next destination.

Our next stop was Mljet, one of Croatia’s most stunning and serene national parks. Famous for its tranquil lakes and verdant forests, Mljet is best explored by bike. With e-bikes available, even steep hills felt like a breeze as we cycled along peaceful paths through thick pine forests and around saltwater lakes. We paused to soak in the serene surroundings and even took a boat ride to visit a 12th-century Benedictine Monastery situated on an island within one of the lakes.

After an adventurous day on land, we returned to relax aboard with cocktails and wine as we prepared for dinner ashore. That evening, we indulged in Croatia’s famous Under the Bell dish, which featured freshly caught seafood slow-cooked over an open fire throughout the day.

Korcula – A Journey Back in Time

Sailing onward brought us to Korcula, often referred to as “Little Dubrovnik” due to its medieval walls and red-roofed buildings. This charming walled city is also believed to be the birthplace of Marco Polo. The island buzzed with energy from tourists eager to explore its beauty. Be sure to book a table at one of the waterfront restaurants upon arrival; they fill up quickly!

Meals Aboard Yacht Getaways

Your Yacht Getaways cruise includes all breakfasts and lunches along with two dinners. Throughout meals, beer, wine, soft drinks, juices, and plenty of water are provided onboard.

Don’t forget your refillable water bottle when packing! We also brought our own coffee mugs. If you prefer other spirits during your trip, you can easily purchase bottles along the way.

Hvar Town – Croatia’s Glitziest Island

Known as Croatia’s party island, Hvar has much more to offer beyond nightlife. We anchored outside its glamorous harbor and took a water taxi into town where shopping, dining, and happy hours awaited us at every turn. Walking up to the fort for sunset views or heading over to Sunset Beach added extra charm to our visit.

At each stop along our journey, our host provided valuable insights on what activities were available—everything from dining suggestions to local hotspots for sunset viewing or happy hour deals—eliminating any need for planning on our part.

In the evening at Hvar Town, you have options: dive into vibrant nightlife at trendy bars or retreat back to your yacht for a quiet night under a canopy of stars. With Yacht Getaways, you set your own pace.

Stari Grad – Discovering Croatia’s Oldest Town

One of the highlights of our cruise was Stari Grad, renowned as one of Europe’s oldest towns, dating back to 384 BC. Despite its rich history, Stari Grad is less crowded than other destinations we explored, providing a tranquil escape with its narrow alleyways, cozy cafes, and delightful local shops.

We meandered through the UNESCO-listed old town, happily getting lost in its enchanting streets. We were pleasantly surprised by the abundance of local art galleries and serene restaurants where we savored delectable Dalmatian cuisine. This charming stop serves as a peaceful contrast to the lively atmosphere of Hvar, offering a cultural experience that enriches your sailing journey.

During our visit, there was an opportunity for a wine-tasting excursion, allowing guests to either join or simply soak in the ambiance of this picturesque town. We docked conveniently close to all the top attractions and dining spots.

Day 7: Sailing into Split – The Grand Finale

As we sailed toward Split, we enjoyed our final breakfast on deck while soaking in breathtaking views of the Dalmatian Coast. Though our journey was nearing its end, the memories of turquoise waters, historic towns, and unforgettable experiences would linger long after we disembarked.

Split is Croatia’s second-largest city and boasts the UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace alongside a vibrant coastal atmosphere. Although we didn’t moor directly in Split, we concluded our adventure in Trogir. Dave and I booked a hotel there to fully appreciate this lovely town before heading to Split.

Trogir is an ideal spot to extend your adventure—whether you’re planning to explore more of Croatia or set off for your next destination.

What to Pack

  • A refillable water bottle and thermos-style coffee mug are essential.
  • A portable USB power supply will keep your phone and electronics charged when not connected to shore power.
  • A portable rechargeable fan can enhance comfort during nights without air conditioning; though cabins have fans, an extra one is helpful for restful sleep.
  • If you’re prone to seasickness, don’t forget your medication.
  • Packing in soft bags like duffels makes for easy storage aboard.
  • To stay organized in small cabins, consider using packing cubes for your clothes.
  • A waterproof phone holder or GoPro is recommended for capturing memorable moments while swimming.
  • Water shoes are advisable for rocky beaches; they make going ashore much easier. While some travelers opted for heavier options like Keens, Body Glove water shoes proved excellent for us.
  • A sun hat will protect your face from UV rays.
  • A long-sleeved shirt or a snorkeling/surf shirt can help prevent sunburn during swims.
  • Sunglasses, chapstick, and sunscreen are must-haves!
  • Packing light is best; beyond a couple of sharp button-down shirts for men or sundresses for women, you'll mostly be in swimwear throughout the trip.
  • Some comfortable shorts and shoes suitable for hiking or cycling will serve you well; running shoes are sufficient since hikes aren’t overly strenuous.
  • Packing multiple bathing suits is wise since you'll likely swim often—it’s nice to have dry options handy!

The Yacht Getaways Difference: Luxury and Adventure Combined

What makes Yacht Getaways truly unique is the perfect blend of adventure and luxury. You’ll get to explore Croatia’s stunning islands while enjoying the comforts of a private yacht. Here are some highlights that make this cruise an unforgettable experience:

  • Beer and Wine Included: Enjoy complimentary drinks throughout the cruise, whether you're unwinding on deck or savoring a meal.
  • Private Skipper: A professional skipper navigates the boat, allowing you to sit back, relax, and enjoy breathtaking views.
  • Paddle Boards, Snorkeling Gear and Floaties: No need to pack your mask or snorkeling gear; everything you need for fun in the water is provided on board for your enjoyment.

Each day of the cruise features opportunities for swimming and snorkeling in secluded locations, alongside visits to beautiful destinations. We docked downtown almost every night, making it easy to explore local nightlife. With everything taken care of, all you have to do is focus on creating memories for a lifetime.
