Nestled along the Adriatic Sea and surrounded by its crystal-clear waters and picturesque beaches lies Dubrovnik—a city that truly captivates visitors with its beauty.

The Old Town of Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage Site encircled by medieval walls built in the 13th century; walking along these walls offers breathtaking views of the city below! Notable sites include Dubrovnik Cathedral and the Rector’s Palace alongside Sponza Palace—each telling stories of the city's rich history.

This enchanting city also served as a backdrop for scenes in Game of Thrones.

2. Porto, Portugal

Northern Portugal's Porto has emerged as a must-see destination in Europe thanks to its stunning medieval architecture set against the Douro River's backdrop.

This coastal gem features golden beaches and grand boulevards perfect for exploration; it has evolved into one of our favorite romantic getaways in Europe.

A stroll through Porto's old town starting at the riverbank reveals charming streets ideal for discovering Fado performances or enjoying a scenic river cruise to admire medieval buildings from an alternative perspective.

The bustling waterfront comes alive during sunset—perfect for sipping port wine while soaking up a captivating atmosphere!

3. Paris, France

Paris is often hailed as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and it undoubtedly reigns as a romantic destination. Each visit deepens our love for this enchanting city, making it impossible to resist returning time and again. While it may sound like a cliché, Paris will forever hold the title of the most stunning city in Europe for us. It's one of those rare places we revisit regularly; no matter how many other cities we explore, we always come back to the City of Lights, captivated by its charm.

The Eiffel Tower offers endless views that never cease to amaze us, and enjoying a champagne toast at its summit is a must-do on any bucket list.

4. Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen holds a special place in our hearts with its fairytale-like ambiance. This captivating city is a delight to explore, featuring Tivoli Gardens, Nyhavn, The Little Mermaid statue, and an intricate network of canals that enhance its beauty. Among all the Scandinavian cities we've visited, Nyhavn stands out with its picturesque waterfront lined by 17th-century townhouses painted in vibrant colors alongside historic sailboats.

5. Venice, Italy

If you're looking for an unforgettable European experience away from cruise crowds, Venice is the perfect choice. Traveling independently and spending nights in this charming city reveals a different side than what day-trippers see. Getting lost in Venice's maze of narrow cobblestone streets and hidden alleys adds to the adventure.

After six days of exploration, Venice quickly became one of our favorite destinations in Europe. We watched as cruise lines rushed their guests through just hours before they departed again without fully experiencing this magical city. Boat trips along the canals create picturesque moments while sipping drinks on bistro terraces feels like living a dream.

6. Athens

Athens boasts some of the world's most renowned ancient ruins, including the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and The Ancient Agora. There's nothing quite like enjoying a drink at a rooftop bar in Monastiraki Square, with the majestic Acropolis overlooking the city.

The city offers numerous vantage points for stunning views through its many rooftop bars and terraces. One of the top spots is Lybitacus Hill, accessible via cable car. Staying in the city center makes it easy to explore all the popular attractions on foot. Athens is one of Europe's most walkable capitals, making it a delight for visitors. Whether your interests lie in history, art, or simply soaking in the vibrant atmosphere, Athens has something special for everyone.

Nestled along the Danube River in Central Europe, Budapest captivates with its stunning waterfront. Crossing the Chain Bridge offers breathtaking views of Buda and Pest—the two halves of this beautiful city come alive after dark.

The Hungarian Parliament building dominates the skyline, illuminated at night while reflections dance upon the river's surface near Széchenyi Chain Bridge—a truly magical scene. Budapest's charm extends beyond its architecture; it's also famous for its thermal baths and ruin bars that add to its unique character.

Florence stands as a testament to artistic brilliance and is one of Europe's most enchanting cities. Every corner reveals captivating sculptures and intricate architectural details that invite leisurely exploration along its cobbled streets. With landmarks such as Michelangelo's David and the Ponte Vecchio alongside exquisite cuisine, Florence encourages visitors to immerse themselves fully.

The Duomo proudly rises in the city center amid traffic-free streets that make walking enjoyable. To truly appreciate Florence's rich art and culture, plan to spend more than just a day here; several days will allow you to delve deeper into what this magnificent metropolis has to offer.

Bergen, Norway, stands out as one of Europe’s most stunning cities, thanks to its breathtaking natural scenery. Nestled among majestic mountains, the city offers a picture-perfect backdrop that enchants visitors. The historic Bryggen area features a picturesque waterfront that adds to its charm. While Oslo may be the first Norwegian city that comes to mind for many travelers, Bergen deserves a prominent spot on any travel enthusiast's bucket list.

Start your exploration in Bergen at Bryggen, a fairytale-like village characterized by its historic wooden houses lining the harbor. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its stunning views and rich architecture. Don’t miss taking the cable car up Mount Fløyen for breathtaking panoramic vistas of the city below. Once you experience Bergen’s beauty, you’ll likely agree it ranks among Europe’s prettiest cities.

10. Brussels, Belgium

Brussels holds a special place in our hearts as one of the first European cities we explored. I vividly remember the moment we turned a corner and were greeted by the awe-inspiring Old Town Square; it was truly breathtaking. We revisited several years later, and that initial feeling of wonder remained intact.

The Square of Brussels is undeniably one of Europe’s most beautiful squares, showcasing exquisite art nouveau buildings that are among the best in Europe. Notably, Horta Hotel Tassa holds the distinction of being the first building constructed in the Art Nouveau style on the continent. With its rich history and charming atmosphere, it is no surprise that this square elevates Brussels to one of our favorite beautiful cities in Europe.

11. Bruges, Belgium

Bruges is often celebrated as one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Our visit back in 1996 didn’t leave us with memories of its beauty at that time; however, upon reflecting on our travels and through recommendations from others since then (and even inspired by films like “In Bruges”), we appreciate this hidden gem more now than ever.

12. Rome, Italy

Rome earns its place on this list due to its remarkable blend of ancient ruins intertwined with modern architecture. Known as The Eternal City, Rome beautifully preserves its rich history while seamlessly integrating contemporary structures within its boundaries. The old Roman architecture stands proudly alongside new developments—creating a unique urban tapestry.

The entire historic center of Rome has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Iconic landmarks such as the Colosseum, Pantheon, and St. Peter’s Basilica are must-see attractions on many travelers’ itineraries—each offering awe-inspiring experiences at every turn. So make sure to add Rome to your list; visiting this magnificent city will undoubtedly leave you enchanted.

13. Prague, Czechia

Prague, often celebrated as one of Europe's most beautiful cities, truly lives up to its reputation. Although it can be bustling and crowded, stepping off the beaten path reveals serene spots perfect for enjoying a meal or an affordable pint. The picturesque river provides stunning views, with the majestic Prague Castle overlooking the charming Vltava River.

If you rise early and stroll through the city, you'll find it largely to yourself. The town square is among the most beautiful in Europe; experiencing it in solitude is nothing short of breathtaking. To our surprise, we noted that most visitors don’t arrive until after 9:00 am, giving us ample opportunity to admire the exquisite architecture and medieval churches in peace.

14. Istanbul, Turkey

From our rooftop terrace at night, Istanbul dazzles with its brilliant lights. This city embodies two distinct personalities—one rooted in Western culture and the other in Eastern traditions. Spanning two continents, it stands as Europe's largest city, showcasing a captivating blend of influences.

The skyline is adorned with beautiful mosques; spires rise prominently above the landscape. The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia are must-see landmarks, while the Old City invites exploration through time. Strolling through the Grand Bazaar or ascending Galata Tower offers some of the finest views of this vibrant metropolis. A visit to Istanbul is a rich cultural journey where East meets West—it’s vast yet easy to navigate on foot.

15. London, England

One of our favorite experiences in London was spending time by the river with Tower Bridge gracefully spanning the Thames. Like many cities, London's premier attractions are found along its waterways. We enjoyed water taxis and ferries that allowed us to appreciate the city's beauty from a unique perspective while exploring its world-class museums.

Over the past two decades, London has evolved into an incredible fusion of historic architecture and modern skyscrapers. With iconic landmarks ranging from Big Ben and the Tower of London to The Shard and The Gherkin, London's skyline is eclectic and stunning—an undeniable beauty that captures every visitor's heart.

16. Dublin, Ireland

Dublin may not have made it onto my list of beautiful cities at first, but after several visits, it has undoubtedly become one of my favorites in Europe. Initially, I focused on skylines and breathtaking views, but I've come to realize that a city’s beauty lies in its culture and the warmth of its people. The River Liffey gracefully winds through the heart of the city, offering charming walks that truly showcase Dublin's allure.

The city boasts serene parks for quiet retreats, fascinating castles to explore, and an exceptional pub scene that enhances its charm. With each visit, Dublin reveals more of its beauty.

17. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Dave and I visited Amsterdam before we started our travel blogging journey, and the experience left a lasting impression. Often referred to as the Venice of the North, Amsterdam is renowned for its picturesque canals. The vibrant waterways contribute to its status as one of Europe's most beautiful cities. It's an ideal destination for leisurely strolls or biking adventures! We feel a deep connection with Amsterdam's liberal values; as Canadians, we share many similarities with the Dutch.

18. Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm ranks among our favorite cities in Scandinavia. Nestled along the Baltic Sea, Sweden's capital features colorful buildings that line the waterfront—creating a stunning visual experience.

One aspect we love about Scandinavian cities is their unique integration of amusement parks right in their centers; Stockholm is no exception with its riverside attractions. This northern gem connects visitors to 14 islands via ferries, ensuring your time there will be unforgettable—making it one of northern Europe’s top tourist destinations.

19. Tallinn, Estonia

Although our visit to Estonia was brief—just a day—I’m thrilled that we chose to visit Tallinn. If you're touring Scandinavia, this enchanting city should definitely be on your itinerary as one of northern Europe's prettiest places.

Tallinn surprised us in many ways; we arrived with limited expectations but found ourselves captivated by its rich history and vibrant atmosphere. With a medieval square, panoramic viewpoints, and ancient walls surrounding it, Tallinn offers all the quintessential elements you seek in a European city. If you're traveling through Scandinavia, make sure to include Estonia on your list!

20. Reykjavik, Iceland

Visiting Iceland was a dream come true, and its capital city, Reykjavik, is absolutely stunning. Although it's one of the smaller cities on our list, Reykjavik is vibrant and full of charm. Like many beautiful European cities, it features colorful buildings along the waterfront, pedestrian-friendly streets, and a plethora of shopping, dining, and nightlife options. This city embodies a “quintessentially Nordic” spirit and deserves a couple of days to truly explore its offerings.

While Reykjavik itself wasn't featured in Game of Thrones, it served as the base for the crew during filming in Iceland's breathtaking national parks, glaciers, and lagoons. As avid fans of the series who have traveled to numerous related destinations worldwide, we found this connection particularly exciting.

21. Barcelona, Spain

The more we visit Barcelona, the more we fall in love with its unique charm. Initially skeptical about Gaudi’s works, we eventually grew to appreciate his innovative and playful architecture. In fact, Barcelona boasts nine UNESCO World Heritage sites that showcase its architectural significance—seven of which are attributed to Antoni Gaudi himself.

With its beautiful waterfronts, serene parks, lively downtown streets, and bustling markets, Barcelona stands out as one of the most vibrant cities we've explored in Europe.

22. Zurich Switzerland

The picturesque city of Zurich is truly a dream destination. Nestled beside Lake Zurich and the Limmat River offers stunning views perfect for watching sunsets while enjoying leisurely strolls among beautifully dressed locals. The city boasts a well-preserved old town filled with historic sites that transport you back in time.

One of our favorite experiences in Zurich was witnessing its beauty from above by taking the Felsenegg cable car up to 803 meters above sea level for breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

23. Vienna, Austria

Visiting Vienna during the holiday season is a magical experience, especially with its enchanting Christmas Markets. The city sparkles with lights and festive cheer, earning its reputation as one of the most beautiful capital cities in Europe. With stunning architecture, remarkable museums, and a rich musical heritage, it's no wonder that Vienna captivates so many visitors.

As you stroll through the charming streets lined with outdoor shops, remember to bundle up and sip on some mulled wine. The opera house, rebuilt after World War II, stands as one of the most glamorous venues in the world.

24. Munich, Germany

Bavaria's Munich took us by surprise; it truly is one of Europe’s hidden gems. As the largest city in Bavaria, Munich boasts vibrant beer halls, a prestigious university, sprawling parks, and impressive architecture. Its cobblestone streets are perfect for wandering through Old Town, where picturesque squares invite exploration by foot or bicycle.

25. Bern, Switzerland

Bern stands out as both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Switzerland's political center—the capital city itself. However, it feels far from a bustling political hub; Bern is designed for leisurely strolls. Its covered walkways make shopping enjoyable regardless of the weather. Experiencing Bern from the Aare River only solidifies its place among the most beautiful cities we've ever visited.

26. Lisbon, Portugal

Choosing a favorite among Portugal's many stunning cities can be tough, but Lisbon shines brightly as a star attraction. Nestled along the Atlantic coast, this vibrant city features iconic landmarks such as Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery overlooking the Tagus River.

The Alfama neighborhood invites you to wander its narrow streets adorned with colorful houses while soaking up the lively atmosphere at Fado Bars. In contrast, Baixa showcases modernity with wide boulevards and elegant buildings alongside historical sites. Additionally, Lisbon boasts contemporary structures like the Vasco da Gama Bridge—the longest bridge in Europe.

27. Seville, Spain

During a memorable road trip through Spain and Italy, we stopped in Seville and immediately wished we could have stayed longer! One of the things we adore about European cities is their commitment to preserving historic areas. If you’ve visited them before, you’ll find that they remain just as breathtaking today, and Seville’s old city is no exception.

Seville has recently gained renewed attention as a filming location for Game of Thrones, showcasing its stunning architecture as the backdrop for the fictional cities of Meereen and Dorne. It's no surprise that Seville ranks among the most beautiful spots in Europe!

28. Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki was our final destination on our Scandinavian tour, and like all the Northern European cities we explored, it was incredibly beautiful! The Helsinki Cathedral stands majestically at the city's center, overlooking vibrant buildings lining the waterfront.

We appreciate how Scandinavian cities often feature public swimming pools right in their heart. In Helsinki, there’s a lovely swimming spot along the canal with impressively clean water! As with many other beloved cities, Helsinki boasts pedestrian streets perfect for strolling, along with numerous shops and charming bistros.

29. Basel, Switzerland

Switzerland is home to an array of stunning cities, and we had to include Basel as our favorite in this list. Nestled along the Rhine River, Basel beautifully marries its rich history with modern architectural designs. This cultural capital features a magnificent Old Town that captivates visitors.

A tour through The Altstadt (Old City) reveals the remarkable Basel Munster Cathedral, which embodies the essence of the city with its twin towers and distinctive red sandstone walls. The Rhine River flows gracefully through the city center; one of the best ways to appreciate Basel's beauty is by taking a boat tour or even swimming in its refreshing waters.

30. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is uniquely situated atop extinct volcanoes and rugged crags that provide panoramic views of its surroundings. The Old Town is especially picturesque with its winding medieval streets flanked by majestic castles and churches; among these is the Royal Mile—Edinburgh's oldest thoroughfare.

The iconic Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline from its perch on volcanic rock and offers breathtaking views over the city below. It houses Scotland's Crown Jewels as well as the Stone of Destiny. Additionally, visitors can enjoy sweeping vistas from atop the Scott Monument—a striking Victorian Gothic tribute to Sir Walter Scott.

Europe is an expansive continent filled with diverse urban centers across various nations—from Russia to Greece and Scandinavia down to Istanbul that bridges two continents. With so many incredible cities to explore throughout Europe, it would take a lifetime to experience them all.
